Welcome to the ASL Instruction Course for Accessibility Services Staff in Post-Secondary Institutions! This course has been designed to equip you with additional knowledge and skills to better support Deaf and hard of hearing students in their post-secondary journey. Whether you’re new to American Sign Language (ASL) or looking to enhance your existing skills, this course will provide you with some introductory sign language to enable direct communication with students.

Communicating with someone in their native language such as ASL, is not just a matter of linguistic convenience and access; it’s also powerful tool for fostering connection, understanding, and inclusion. Communicating even with very basic signs sends a message of being seen and valued in a world where the dominant language is based on the ability to hear and spoken English. Using sign language promotes cultural sensitivity and effective communication, while also contributing to the celebration of diverse cultures and the dismantling of communication barriers.

We are excited to share this introductory course with you! You can find additional resources for continued learning here on our website. We value your input and encourage you to share your questions and feedback in this survey upon completing the modules. Your insights will contribute to the ongoing development of this course and other tools for fostering greater communication access and inclusion.

Thank you for choosing this course. We look forward to supporting your commitment to making post-secondary education more inclusive and accessible for all.
