Learning Outcomes – Module 4

At the end of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Define self-advocacy.
  2. Explain the 3 different types of communication.
  3. Evaluate your own strengths and weaknesses in being a self-advocate.
  4. Identify barriers that will affect your ability to effectively self-advocate and apply strategies to overcome them.
  5. Apply self-advocacy skills to the applicable setting (i.e. school, practicum placement, or future workplace).

It can be challenging to self-advocate. Your post-secondary institution, as well as teachers and classmates, will require certain information in order to provide or change the accommodations you need. You will benefit from becoming skilled at advocating for yourself and being able to explain how you need others to communicate with you.
