Self-Care Ideas for Relieving Stress
There are some evidence-based ideas for managing stress in your life (Varvogli & Darviri, 2011). Note: these suggestions are not intended to replace medical advice and if you have any concerns, please contact your doctor.
We have provided some links below for you to see some different methods of mindfulness practices and meditation for self-care that may be useful. Feel free to explore other options available to you, either online or in your community to support your well-being.
- Exercise – 30-60 minutes most days of the week for healthy living.
- Diaphragmatic breathing – also referred to as abdominal or deep breathing that involves taking smooth, slow and regular breaths.
- Guided meditation

- Mindfulness-based stress reduction – focuses on the present moment by purposefully paying attention and being aware of your surroundings, your emotions, your thoughts and how your body feels.
If you are more visual and prefer visual methods to learn the above techniques, consider checking out applications from Apple and Android. Many of these applications have visual techniques to guide muscle relaxation, breathing, and meditation.
Module 8 focused on sharing ideas and options to help you manage your stress and for creating a path to well-being to keep yourself healthy while pursuing your post-secondary education. These tips for well-being can be used throughout your entire life as you manage the stress of a career, relationships, etc.
Module 9 will focus on summarizing everything you have learned to date.
